Volunteers: The Heart of Our Sport

Eventing competitions right up to the Olympics rely on volunteers to keep competitions fun, safe, and exciting. No prior experience is necessary; just a desire to get involved with a sport that celebrates horses and riders of all ages. Give us the chance to match you with the right job!!  

Waredaca provides an orientation each morning before the competition begins which will help in completely understanding assignments.  Plus there are staff members and officials to answer questions and provide other details necessary to have a fun and enjoyable day.

2017 Dates:  June 3, 4; June 11; August 19, 20; October 19-22 and October 29

Liz (lizskips520@gmail.com) remains our Volunteer Coordinator, with Jessica Jones as our Volunteer Support specialist, in addition to her Awards Chair duties, and Linda Cosgrove heading up the Goshen Hunt group as their Waredaca Volunteer Coordinator!

You can soon check out the NEW Waredaca Volunteer Logo, a slight alteration to our wonderful ‘barn’ logo highlighting YOU!  It will now appear on the NEW Volunteer VESTS to easily identify you to our riders and visitors… as an expert resource for info about our farm, the current competition, as well as recognizing you doing your job for the event weekend!

Upon arrival, all Volunteers will receive our NEW vests from your phase chair and are to wear it while doing your volunteer job.  The reason for this is actually quite simple—as a Waredaca Volunteer, you represent our farm as well as providing accessibility to any visitor who may need direction, advice or support.  Wearing the vest is an easy visual ID for anyone to see, and offers instant ‘user friendliness’ that all of our volunteers so capably provide.

At each competition…there will be 10 random smoothie coupons drawn by Jessica and presented to the lucky recipients~!  Plus, two $50 random Restaurant coupons will be drawn at the conclusion of each competition!

Continuing on the 2016 success of the Area 2 VIP program, the Waredaca LEADERBOARD will be in effect for 2017 using the same application for tracking as in 2016—Jessica can assist anyone with this when checking out at the end of the competition day.   Our year-end winner will receive $250 and our lovely perpetual trophy.  USEA Area 2 will continue their VIP leaderboard too.

The Waredaca BUCKS program has also changed.  The Area 2 Event Organizers recently shared their specific volunteer programs for all to compare and contrast.  There was much discussion of volunteering in general, and the various means of ‘thanking’ each of you for your time and efforts:  logo wear, hospitality, rewards and so on.  And many ‘old school’ who feel that part of volunteering is simply to support the organizing facility, personnel and the sport itself.

Our program was one of the strongest, in the sense of what was being compensated.   Actually there was only one other event in our area that rewarded BUCKS to the extent that we did; quite a few events do not offer a ‘bucks’ type of return, a reward form that fits riders and non-riders alike.  And many of you choose not to use your BUCKS. 

After much consideration and based on this summary of current practices of our local event organizers, we have made the following modifications to our BUCKS program:

Waredaca BUCKS will be rewarded at the following rate of exchange, based on hours exclusively worked in the Volunteer Job:

            $25 for 4 hours             $ 35 for up to 7 hours            $50 for more than 7 hours

IF you wish to claim BUCKS, these will be available from Jessica Jones, at the Awards table near the corner show office.  She will have the coupons and will be dispense them directly to you.   This is the only time BUCKS will be available to volunteers—the actual day of the competition.  There will be an expiration date on the BUCKS …for lessons and board-60 days from the date earned; for other services or options, i.e. XC schooling or logowear, 12 months from the date earned.

For our younger volunteers, those ages 15 and under, you are WAREDACA AMBASSADORS

…If you are chosen as a special Waredaca Volunteer Ambassador and work at least half a day, you will earn:

  • A special ball cap with your title
  • A pizza/ride just for you and the other junior volunteers with one of our Waredaca staff…a trailride followed by a pizza ‘party’, scheduled soon after the event weekend
  • Job opportunities are limited.  If interested, contact Liz.

We are still soliciting for show jump crew…and would love to identify a group that would assist us with this job in exchange for a donation to their ‘cause’—4H, school or church groups etc.  For those teens under age 16 who would like to work the jump ring, there will be ‘try outs’ with Gretchen and Liz; just email either to set something up!
